Hi! I am interested in engineering and want to take General Engineering Science (course is conducted in English) in TU Hamburg. I'm a JC2 student next year, so it seems like I have enough time to prepare:)
1. I'm an IP student and I've never take O Level. Can I apply with good A level results only?
2. My JC subject combi is Physics, Chemistry, Math and Chinese Lit. Is the subject Chinese Lit affecting my application as it is in Chinese?
3. To strengthen my application can I submit SAT & AP results? And does that help?
4. I am not good at English. What's the minimum requirement for A Level GP to be admitted in International Degree Courses? Do I need to take TOFEL? (I am not Singaporean but I study here since sec3) And can I submit SAT score for English proficiency proof?
5. I did not apply for H3. Does that affect application?
6. Is musical instrument diploma cert useful in applying Engineering courses?
Thank you very much if you can answer my queries! |

Hi wq,
I don't do Engineering but I'll do my best to help with your queries:
1. The universities used to ask us also for our O level results, but as far as I know there have been IP students (ok, I only know one) who've been admitted to German universities so I presume A level results alone could be sufficient. You should check with the university.
2. I don't think Chinese Lit will affect your application negatively.
3. I don't think SATs help unless they're required. Furthermore I don't think the universities really require submission of anything apart from what they ask for. AP is pretty american too, no?
4. You should check with the university as it should have very clear guidelines of proof of English proficiency.
5. Don't think that would really affect your chances.
6. Don't think that would help either.
Cheers

From TUHH website, admission requirements for "General Engineering Science" Bachelors programme:
They are expected to show proficiency in English by taking TOEFL or IELTS. The minimum TOEFL score required for the course in General Engineering Science is 550 (paperbased)/ 213 (computer-based)/ 79 (internetbased). The minimum IELTS score is 6.5. The knowledge of German has to be proved by a certificate on the level „Zertifikat Deutsch“ from a recognized institution, and in addition, the German language examination (DSH-2 or TestDaF) has to be passed after 2 semesters at TUHH.
That means you need TOEFL or IELTS as well as beginners' level German. |

Hi!
Just want to seek more info as well as my brother is also interested in studying in TUHH's General Engineering Programme.
He graduated from TP with a Diploma in Mechatronic 2 years ago and will ROD in June and is hoping to start his Bachelor in Oct 2010. However, when looking online at the info, it does not seem realistic as he seem to need a basic level of German to gain entry.
Would there be a way round it since in the first year, majority of the modules will be conducted in English. Can he do the German studies the same time he does the first year. Or perhaps the school will receive application on grounds that he completes the TUHH language school before starting his first year?
And with regards to the English level, he has both the O'level and Diploma to prove that he have always been studying in English and that would not be an issue. Would SATS or TOFEL still be required as I understand that in some EU countries as long as you can prove that you have 12 years of minimum studies in English, you would not need to go through either of the test.
Any advices would be appreciated. To be honest, I had difficulties trying to figure out the different levels of requirements since most of them are written in German.
Thanks alot!

Take a look at these offerings. They admit students to their own German language course in September & lessons proper begin first week of October. I am a 7th semester student in the EBE course. The first 2 semesters are taught in English & German will be taught during 3 weekdays during term time & intensively 5 days a week, 4 hours a day during the holiday breaks.

Hi! I have one more question.
Any seniors have applied NUS/NTU as well? Coz I don't dare to put all of my eggs into one basket... Germany still seems like a dream.
Deadline for local university offer confirmation is in June, but German university offers are in July. What can I do if I've accepted local offer but later German uni give me another offer?
Thanks a lot!! |

| wq: I do not think accepting the offer from NUS/NTU will be a big problem. From my past experiences, there has always been the option of giving up your place, be it through the computer system or otherwise. You have to check with the relevant universities in this case on their policies. |
